The name Catania comes from the Sicilian “Katane”, which means “short cut” or “grater” and refers to the irregular lava terrain found in Catania.
The civic symbol of the city is the elephant, called “u Liotru” by the local Catanesi. Catania is home to the Royal Hotel, one of the most beautiful 4 star hotels of the region. The Royal Hotel is situated in what used to a noble palace during the 18th century. The hotel has maintained the style and elegance of the original building but with a revised sobriety, and succeeds simultaneously in offering the highest standards of quality in all of its many services. The hotel boasts many splendid and unique terraces overlooking the antique rooftops of the historic centre, offering a wonderful opportunity for guests to discover the hidden treasures of late, sumptuous Sicilian Baroque.
The proximity of the hotel to the Cathedral of Catania, and to the most important faculties of the University of Catania makes the Royal Hotel the preferred starting point of reference for those wishing to visit the historic centre of Catania on foot.
Furthermore the Royal Hotel is the best viewing place in the city from which to watch the most important feast day in the city’s calendar: the festival of St Agatha, Patron Saint and protector of Catania.
